Most residential entries fail in the same place, and it is not the lock. It is the strike plate — three-quarter-inch screws into soft jamb trim, which a single kick will take out along with a chunk of the frame.
A security door is worth having. A security door on a jamb that has not been reinforced is theatre.
The strike plate problem
The deadbolt on a standard door is usually fine. What gives way is the wood it throws into: a thin strike plate held by short screws into the door casing rather than into the structural stud behind it.
Reinforcing that connection — a heavy strike plate, long screws driven into framing, and a box strike where the jamb allows it — is inexpensive and changes the failure point entirely. It is the first thing we recommend on any security job.
Storm security doors
A security storm door gives you a locked outer barrier you can still see and hear through, which is genuinely useful at a front entry — you can open the main door to a stranger without opening the house.
The frames are heavier than a standard storm door, the glass is laminated or tempered, and the hinges and lock are rated accordingly. These are one of the three products we are licensed to sell at the door.
Hardware and glazing
Deadbolts, keypad and smart locks, reinforced strike plates, hinge-side security pins, and shatter-resistant film or laminated glazing on sidelights — which are frequently the weakest point of an otherwise solid entry.
Keypad locks are the upgrade most people are happiest with afterward, because they solve the everyday problem of keys as well as the security one.
