Why doors move in Calgary
Seasonal humidity swings and hard freeze-thaw cycles move framing lumber. Clay soils under a lot of Calgary neighbourhoods move foundations. Over ten or fifteen years, an opening that was square when the house was built no longer is, and the door starts complaining.
The fix is usually to bring the door back to the opening rather than the other way round — hinge shims, mortise depth, strike plate position, and where genuinely necessary, planing the smallest amount that solves it.
When repair is not the answer
If the slab has rotted, delaminated or twisted, or if the frame itself has failed, a repair buys months rather than years. We will tell you that plainly and quote the replacement instead, without pretending the repair was ever going to hold.
