A video doorbell is a twenty-minute job done properly and a recurring annoyance done badly. The two things that go wrong are the mount and the angle: a unit screwed flat to a brick return that only ever sees the side of a jacket, or one aimed at the sky because nobody used a wedge.
We do these on their own, or alongside a door install while we are already at the entry.
Mounting and aim
Entries are rarely flat and rarely square to where people actually stand. Getting a usable image means angling the unit — wedge and corner mounts exist for exactly this reason and are routinely left in the box.
We set the aim against the live feed on your phone before we pack up, so you see what it will actually record rather than finding out a week later.
Wired or battery
Battery units are simple and go almost anywhere, at the cost of recharging every few months. Wired units run off existing doorbell wiring and never need charging, which is the better answer where the wiring is already there and sound.
Where a chime transformer is undersized for a video unit — common in older Calgary homes — that has to be addressed or the unit will keep dropping offline. We check it rather than discovering it afterwards.
Set up, not just installed
The unit gets connected to your network, paired to your phone, and its motion zones set so it notifies you about people at your door rather than every car on the street. That last part is the difference between a camera you keep enabled and one you mute within a fortnight.
